Cioch na h-Oighe and Goatfell
From £15.00

Cioch na h-Oighe rises up impressively on the south side of Glen Sannox, as if to guard the entrance to the further glen and the inner peaks of Arran. It stands at the front edge of a ridge that runs around the back of the glacial hollow of Coire na Ciche, “The Devils Punchbowl”.

Distance: 12km
Highest point gained: 874m
Walk duration: 8hrs
Terrain: some rough mountain paths, moorland, some scrambling
Technical Rating: Challenging
Blister Rating: 3

Walk description: Starting at the mouth of Glen Sannox the first part of this walk gently climbs to the foot of Cioch na h-Oighe over footpath and moor. From there, the climb to the top is very steep and 200m is ascended in little over half a kilometre with some scrambling on the way. After stopping for a while on the top, the ridge that follows on round the back of the Devils Punchbowl is exposed with great views of the Punchbowl and challenging terrain. From here the walk then climbs to the next peak of Mullach Buidhe and on to North Goatfell with a good path over high ground. The route continues up the Stacach ridge, running over and around a series of tors and buttresses that make up this section and eventually the very top of Goatfell is reached, Arran's highest peak. From the top down into Cladach is on a well made footpath.
