Arran is a popular destination for geologists, who come to see intrusive igneous landforms such as sills and dykes as well as sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Mesozoic. Don't let these big words put you off, this walk will take you through the glens but along the way learn a little about the surrounding geology in nature's classroom.
Distance: 12km
Highest point gained: 432m
Total ascent: 432m
Walk duration: 7
Terrain: easy walking in each glen on good but rough mountain paths, a short section of upward scrambling with some exposure
Technical Rating: Moderate
Blister Rating: 3
Walk description: The walk starts gently in Glen Sannox to the navigation beacons, past the remains of a former Barytes mine, across Sannox Burn and upstream into the glacial U-shaped valley where a good mountain path leads up to The Saddle (432m). This is the highest point of the day, however the climb out of Glen Sannox does involve a hands-on scramble up Whin Dyke, a steep and rocky granite gully or chimney – hence this walk being graded a ‘moderate’ rather than ‘easy’. Learn about the geology of the island moving through the glens, and the powerful effect of ice on our landscape. The Saddle might be the highest point of this walk, but it is the lowest gap amongst the towering mountains, being surrounded by huge granite slabs and outcrops. Avoiding the steep slopes heading off to the west and south east, the route heads south into Glen Rosa descending down a gentle gradient alongside the Glenrosa Water as it moves down from the mountains to the sea.
