Walk Description: The three Beinns is one of the true classic Arran walks, taking in a semicircle of high ridges running between Beinn Nuis, Beinn Tarsuinn and Beinn a’Chliabhain. Starting from near Brodick, in Glen Rosa, this is a perfect day out as an introduction into the northern hills, with stunning views that stretch out over the Western hills, take in the lowlands of the South of Arran and the majestic peaks and ridges of the highest Northern hills. The route takes you up the side of the Garbh Allt burn, across the moor and up onto the main horseshoe of the Three Beinns. Once around the ridges and tops the walk then moves back down onto the moor and back down the Garbh Allt to finish. Along the way you will pass by ‘Old Man Tarsuinn’ a rock outcrop with the striking features of a mans face and you will walk the Bowman’s Pass where hunters of old once worked.
Keep your eyes open for birds and wildlife as you go, eagles and ravens are often to be seen and heard on this walk, either soaring high in the thermals or playing wildly over the ridges and drops. Be alert especially for Black Grouse, as there has been a recent reintroduction of this once native bird to the hills of Arran. Red deer are abundant on Arran and expect to see them on the moors and especially in Coirre a’Bhradain.
Described by R. Angus Downie in 1933 in his book ‘All about Arran’ as “a really good days work” this walk is friendly and varied. The terrain runs from steep rough mountain walking to moor land, mostly on well placed paths.
