A beautiful walk which visits the isolated north-eastern shore passing through the village of Laggan, only abandoned in 1911 and visits two of the most important geological sites on the island. You may see red squirrels, red deer and golden eagles while crossing over to Laggan; and many types of shore bird and sea mammals along the coast back to Lochranza. At Laggan see the evidence of a 2m long giant centipedes living on Arran 300 million years ago.

Walk description: The walk starts at the head of Loch Ranza and follows the old mule track past the site of the Lochranza slate quarry to the pass (distance 2.9km, height 263m). On the way there are extensive views of Arran’s Northern mountains with the Sleeping Warrior, and across the Firth of Clyde. There is a steep descent to the north-eastern shore through abandoned farmland down to the old white shepherd’s house (Laggan Cottage) (distance 4.9km). The return route along the coast can be quite muddy and at several points there are minor scrambles over bedrock outcrops. Look out for the abandoned mine workings and giant centipede tracks at Laggan Harbour (distance 5.7km) and the 18th century ship carvings at Ossian’s Cave (distance 7.0km). A 300-year old rockslide blocks the way at An Scriodan (at 8.1km) and there is a short scramble before reaching Fairy Dell. The final section continues along a popular coastal path, past James Hutton’s unconformity (at 9.8km) before returning to Loch Ranza bay.
